Electrodynamic Forces in Elastic Matter

چکیده

A macroscopic theory for the dynamics of elastic, isotropic matter in presence of electromagnetic fields is proposed here. We avail of Gordon’s general relativistic derivation of Abraham’s electromagnetic energy tensor as starting point. The necessary description of the elastic and of the inertial behaviour of matter is provided through a fourdimensional generalisation of Hooke’s law, made possible by the introduction of a four-dimensional “displacement” vector. As intimated by Nordström, the physical origin of electrostriction and of magnetostriction is attributed to the change in the constitutive equation of electromagnetism caused by the deformation of matter. The part of the electromagnetic Lagrangian that depends on that deformation is given explicitly for the case of an isotropic medium and the resulting expression of the electrostrictive force is derived, thus showing how more realistic equations of motion for matter subjected to electromagnetic fields can be constructed.

Coherent Electrodynamic Processes in Solid Molecular Hydrogen

The many experimental puzzles of solid hydrogen, that seem to defy the generally accepted view of condensed matter, are shown to be a rather straightforward consequence of a new approach to condensed matter physics, that takes into account the coherent electrodynamic processes, predicted by Quantum ElectroDynamics (QED), that have been so far overlooked. As a consequence, a revision of the pres...

Experimental assessment of the contribution of electrodynamic interactions to long-distance recruitment of biomolecular partners: Theoretical basis.

Highly specific spatiotemporal interactions between cognate molecular partners essentially sustain all biochemical transactions in living matter. That such an exquisite level of accuracy may result from encountering forces solely driven by thermal diffusive processes is unlikely. Here we propose a yet unexplored strategy to experimentally tackle the long-standing question of a possibly active r...

Mitochondrial metabolism - neglected link of cancer transformation and treatment.

Physical processes in living cells were not taken into consideration among the essentials of biological activity, regardless of the fact that they establish a state far from thermodynamic equilibrium. In biological system chemical energy is transformed into the work of physical forces for various biological functions. The energy transformation pat...

Longitudinal Electrodynamic Forces | and Their Possible Technological Applications

This thesis deals with the relatively unknown phenomena of longitudinal forces in conductors. A survey of relevant experiments is given. Amp ere electrodynamics, which has been proposed to account for the phenomena, is compared with a Maxwell stress approach, and these are found to be equivalent. The relationship between di erent `action at a distance' theories is discussed. The role of relativ...

Force distributions and force chains in random stiff fiber networks.

We study the elasticity of random stiff fiber networks. The elastic response of the fibers is characterized by a central force stretching stiffness as well as a bending stiffness that acts transverse to the fiber contour. Previous studies have shown that this model displays an anomalous elastic regime where the stretching mode is fully frozen out and the elastic energy is completely dominated b...
